Artist's Opening Reception
Saturday, October 1st, 5pm - 8pm.
From the clarity of light to the mysteries of darkness; from the obscure, impenetrable to the playful and loving. Kai Rittun's work is a trail through varying moods such as one would experience when walking through the varied and dramatic nature of his native Norway. The sun scattered woodlands, the murky seas and the clarity of the fjords provide ample inspiration for Rittun's distinctive woodcuts.
Gallery 169 is proud to present Kai Rittun, an established Norwegian artist and a master of the woodcut technique, one of the oldest techniques in fine art printmaking.
The Scandinavian Wave Exhibition brings together a broad based selection whose theme and expression are characteristic of Rittun's flair for capturing the essence of natural life. Born in 1962, in Oslo, Rittun's work draws the public into the world of nature, to explore and revel in the details and shapes that are all around us. The stark outlines in black and white are a naked contrast to the tenderness with which the figures are revealed.
An uplifting experience, his woodcuts take us on a fluid journey with the animals he portrays. We have the opportunity to become one with their movements and their surroundings. At once, imitating the ease and the struggle of everyday life for both man and creature.
Norwegian art history is widely acclaimed and Rittun's expression and style are directly derived from the influence of Edvard Munch and, fittingly, Rittun's work forms part of the collections at The Norwegian National Gallery, The Norwegian National Bank and the Northern Norway Art Museum. The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design has also bought his work into their national collection.
Rittun has exhibited work throughout Norway in both individual exhibitions and with selected artists.
"The Scandinavian Wave Exhibition" will be on view at Gallery 169 from October 1st - November, 2016.
